Comparing Tesla Powerwall 3 vs Sungrow SBH is really a choice between two ways of building a home battery system. The Powerwall 3 is a single all-in-one unit with a built-in solar inverter. The Sungrow SBH is a modular high-voltage battery stack that pairs with a separate Sungrow hybrid inverter. Both are strong options for Australian homes, and Sunloop Energy installs both, so this guide sticks to the published specs and explains which suits which household.
Quick verdict
- Choose Tesla Powerwall 3 if you want one tidy wall- or floor-mounted unit, about 13.5 kWh of storage is the right size, and your home is on single-phase power or only needs backup on one phase.
- Choose Sungrow SBH if you want more capacity from day one, you value building a stack in 5 kWh steps, or you need a hybrid inverter matched to a three-phase home.
- Either way, the better choice depends on your evening usage, your switchboard and whether you already have solar.

Capacity and scalability
A single Powerwall 3 gives you 13.5 kWh of usable storage. That suits many households that use most of their power in the evening. If you need more, Tesla’s datasheet lists up to three Expansion units per Powerwall 3, with availability and system limits depending on the market.
The Sungrow SBH starts at a higher point. The SBH200 has four 5 kWh modules for 20 kWh, and a single stack goes up to 40 kWh with eight modules. Up to four stacks can run in parallel for 160 kWh. That makes it a natural fit for large homes, heavy evening use, electric vehicles or anyone planning to electrify more of the house. If you only need a smaller system, Sungrow’s SBR series uses 3.2 kWh modules and may be a closer match.
Don’t buy the biggest battery by default, though. The federal discount tapers as capacity rises, so extra storage should earn its place. Our guide on how to size a home battery walks through the maths.
Power output and backup
Capacity tells you how long a battery can run. Power tells you how much it can run at once. The Powerwall 3 can be configured to 5, 10 or 11.04 kW of continuous AC power, which is generous for one unit. The final setting can depend on your network’s rules.
For Sungrow, the battery and inverter work as a pair. The SBH200 is rated at 14.08 kW nominal and the SBH400 at 28.16 kW, but those figures are reduced by temperature and state of charge, and your hybrid inverter sets the real limit. Sungrow’s compatibility chart also shows that not every SBH size suits every inverter, so the pairing needs to be designed properly.
Backup works differently on each system too. The Powerwall 3 uses Tesla’s Backup Gateway 2 to detect outages and isolate your home from the grid. Sungrow backup depends on the inverter and how your circuits are wired. In either case, ask which circuits will stay on in a blackout, because whole-home backup is a design choice rather than an automatic feature. See can batteries power a whole house? for more.
All-in-one or separate inverter?
Tesla Powerwall 3
The solar inverter is built in, with three MPPTs and up to 20 kW of DC solar input. That means fewer boxes on the wall and a simple setup for a new solar and battery install. The trade-off is that the inverter and battery are one product, so you’re tied to Tesla’s ecosystem and its app.
Sungrow SBH
The SBH connects to a Sungrow hybrid inverter from the SH series, so you choose the inverter to suit your solar array and phase supply. It’s monitored through the iSolarCloud app. You’ll have more hardware on site, and at 196 kg or more the stack sits on a floor stand, so it needs suitable space.
Three-phase homes
This is one of the clearest differences. The Powerwall 3 is a single-phase unit. It can be installed in a three-phase home, but independent reviews report that backup is on one phase only, so three-phase appliances such as some ducted air conditioners or pool equipment won’t run in an outage.
Sungrow offers three-phase hybrid inverters that work with the SBH. If your home is on three-phase power, ask your installer which inverter suits your loads, including what it can supply during an outage.
Warranty
Both carry a 10-year warranty. Sungrow’s battery warranty for the SBH200 to SBH400 promises at least 70% of initial capacity at 120 months from installation, or 126 months from manufacture, whichever comes first. It lists unlimited cycles for daily self-consumption and backup use, with throughput limits for other uses. Tesla’s datasheet lists 10 years for the Powerwall 3 and Backup Gateway 2, and the full terms are in Tesla’s warranty document. With either brand, ask how the warranty treats virtual power plant use.
Cheaper Home Batteries discount
Tesla states that the Powerwall 3 is eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. For Sungrow, the exact battery and inverter combination needs to be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved list, and we’ll confirm that on your quote.
The discount is based on usable capacity, with the full rate applying to the first 14 kWh. For a May to December 2026 installation at about $40 per certificate, that’s very roughly $3,700 for 13.5 kWh and $4,800 for 20 kWh. Certificate prices vary, so treat these as indicative. The STC factor also drops from 6.8 to 5.7 on 1 January 2027, which reduces the discount for the same battery.
Installation considerations
- Location: both are rated IP55, but the site still has to comply with AS/NZS 5139 battery location rules.
- Weight: the Powerwall 3 weighs 130 kg, while an SBH stack is 196 to 376 kg.
- Existing solar: check how your current inverter will work with the new system before choosing.
- Switchboard: older boards can limit either option. See our switchboard upgrade guide.
- Network limits: your distributor may limit export or inverter size.

FAQ
Is the Sungrow SBH bigger than the Powerwall 3?
In capacity, yes. The SBH200 to SBH400 range offers 20 to 40 kWh per stack, compared with 13.5 kWh usable for one Powerwall 3 before any expansion.
Does the Powerwall 3 need a separate solar inverter?
No. It has a built-in solar inverter with three MPPTs. The Sungrow SBH does need a compatible Sungrow hybrid inverter.
Which is better for a three-phase home?
Sungrow is often the stronger fit, because you can pair the battery with a three-phase hybrid inverter. The Powerwall 3 can still work if single-phase backup covers your essential circuits.
Can I join a virtual power plant with either battery?
VPP options change and depend on your retailer, location and battery. Check the current offers and the warranty terms before you sign up.
